Hey, Smart Fros! Today’s blog post is going to be different than my normal hair, debt and lawyer advice posts.
If you have been following me then you know I am on a mission to pay off over $200,000 worth of debt.
In order for me to pay off that large amount of money, I had to start looking for ways to earn more money.
Now the thing is, I was not going back to school in order to do that. In fact, my mission is to work with what I have.
One thing that I have been blessed to have is this online community I created back in 2009.
Up until 2018 social media for me has always been a hobby, but to put any real dent in my debt than I needed to use my platform to help me work with brands and earn more income.
Now I do not have a huge following, in fact, my social media following right now stands at an average of fewer than 23,000 followers between my youtube channel and Instagram account.
However, since I started taking my social media influence seriously I have successfully been able to land an average of one brand deal a month.
In this post, I will be sharing with you my tips on how I work with brands with such a small following.
TIPS TO WORKING WITH BRANDS
Believe in Your Content
If you do not believe in the content you produce than brands will not either.
You have to believe that your content is worth being paid for.
I believe that the content I produce is just as, if not better, than those with a large following.
Therefore, it is only a matter of time before I will start getting more paid brand deals that I know I deserve because my content can speak for itself.
Know Your Worth
The worse thing you can do for your brand is sell yourself short.
Creating content is work. Sometimes you have film and refilm things to get it perfect.
If you’re like me and create hair tutorials than you know the struggle if you have a failed hairstyle that you have to redo.
Now I’m not saying charge 10,000 dollars when you only have 1,000 followers.
I’m saying be reasonable and do not always listen to those who claim 100 dollars to ever certain amount of followers you have.
You can determine how much you deserve to be paid depending on the type of work the brand is demanding.
I find that Social Bluebook is a great starting point for figuring out what you should charge when you have absolutely no clue.
Remember: Some work brands ask for require more work and you may have to adjust your starting amount depending on what they are requesting.
Listen, this is honestly the most important to tip I can give you.
Contact the brands you want to work with. I used to believe brands did not want to work with me because maybe I did not fit the typical “popular” influencer look.
But then I quickly realize that is not it at all. Brands love influencers because they are regular people who can get other regular people to purchase their products.
The real reason brands were not checking for me was flat out because they did not know I existed. It is way too many social media influencers to ever keep up.
My less than 23K following is literally drop in the bucket and therefore is no possible way a brand will know I exist without me letting them know I exist.
Pro Tip: Sometimes building a relationship is more important than the payment of one video.
Maybe this should go before the contact brands.
However, before you contact a brand make sure you know your engagement stats.
In all honesty, the brands want to know if they pay you will they get a return on their investment.
This is where have a small following actually works to your advantage. Check out this post about How Mirco-Influencers are the new wave.
Not only should you be consistent in your producing content.
(Nobody likes influencers who only post when it is sponsored). But you should also be consistent in the brands you reach out too. The reality is you will get a lot of no’s (actually no responses) before you get those Yes.
Just because a brand says “no”, once does not mean that “no” is forever, reach back out in another 6 months with better stats.
But you have to keep trying. If you stop short you may miss out on the opportunity awaiting you if you just sent one more e-mail. Carve a day aside once a week or once a month to just contact brands.
Don’t Get Discouraged
It is easy to get discouraged in this social media influencer game.
One thing that used to discourage me so much was the fact that I always keep seeing the exact same natural hair girls at each event.
I started to wonder were these companies even allowing room from other people.
However, this year I saw a huge change. I saw so many more natural hair girls getting opportunities to work with brands at natural hair events.
Heck, this year the natural hair girls were even at Beautycon. Some of these beautiful women also did not have huge followings as well.
Just remember to stay true to yourself and brand. The opportunities will come
What’s For You Will Be For You
I put this advice in at the last minute.
But I think it important to remember what God has planned for you is already yours. Don’t block your blessing because you’re too worried about what the next person has.
There is a brand out there just for you.
